Australia Pledges Gun Law Review After Deadly Attack on Sydney's Hanukkah Celebration
By ACE Investors / 15 December 2025

Australian leaders have promised to examine the nation's firearm regulations following a tragic shooting that claimed 15 lives at a Jewish event in Sydney. The incident, which authorities have classified as terrorism, occurred on Sunday evening at Bondi Beach during a public gathering to mark the start of Hanukkah.

Police confirmed that the attackers were a father-and-son duo. One was shot dead by officers at the scene, while the younger suspect remains in hospital under guard. Videos from the beach showed the pair using rifles as crowds scattered in panic. Over 40 others were injured, some critically, including children and elderly attendees. Victims included community figures like a local rabbi and a Holocaust survivor.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the site on Monday and laid flowers. He described the violence as an outright assault on the Jewish community and vowed stronger measures against antisemitism. "We'll take every step needed to keep people safe," he said during a press conference. A national cabinet meeting with state leaders was scheduled to discuss responses.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns echoed the call, noting that current rules allow certain powerful rifles originally meant for rural use. He indicated his government is preparing changes, though passing new laws will require time. Police revealed the older attacker had legally owned several firearms for years.

This marks Australia's most serious mass shooting since the 1996 Port Arthur tragedy, which led to rigid national gun controls and a buyback program. Experts say the event will spark fresh debate about whether those rules need updating, especially with rising reports of antisemitic incidents in recent years.

Jewish community leaders expressed grief and frustration, pointing to prior warnings about escalating threats. The nation observed a moment of silence as investigations into motives and potential oversights continue.
